Fridaythorpe

St Mary's
SE 875 592
fridaythorpe.jpg

A wonderful old church set back from the road in this small village.

It has a good Romanesque door arch which holds the figure of a man though it's difficult to see what he is doing. Inside the keystone in the chancel arch has a figure carved into it, said to be the risen Christ with a communion wafer. Behind the arch I found a stone with what looks like the rear of a horse carved upon it though I was assured this was just an optical illusion, I disagree.

There are many pilgrims' marks in the stone work especially around the font area, said to be made by pilgrims on their way to Bridlington. Outside there is a carved peacock now situated in the west wall and a piece of stone said to be part of an ancient cross.

Finally in the exterior west wall of the porch there is a small green man.

Clicking on the map reference at the top of the page will take you to a map of the area
