This circle first came to my attention when reading a list of sites of
interest compiled by Stanhope White. He lodged the list with the North
Yorkshire Moors National Park and it was through their offices that I
gained access. To the best of my knowledge the site is not listed
elsewhere.
The site is easy to find being visible from the road to Farndale.
Unfortunately it is very difficult to photograph and those shown here
don't do it justice.
The circle is too large to fit into one photograph, the shot above was taken from
within the circle facing east. Two of the larger stones can be seen to
the left and right of the picture.
Further photographs are shown below along with a rough plan of the site I drew up after realising the circle was in fact egg-shaped.
The two large stones in the top photograph are numbers 2 (0.8m high x
1.8m) and 4 (0.4m high x 1.7m), whilst the large one in the third
photograph is number 1 (0.7m high x 0.85m).
The outlier is 1.7m high.
The centre of the circle bears a large hole and obvious sets of tyre
tracks run into the circle from the north-west, this damage has been
reported. One of the stones (5) appears to have been pushed over, the
stone has come clear of its socket and moved a little way so that if
stood upright it would not automatically drop back into the hole.
There may be another circle not far from the outlier. The whole area is
covered in scattered stones and it is difficult to make out if any of
them appear to have been placed there. The area has recently been
reviewed by English Heritage but I have not yet seen the revised
scheduling documents.
