Barrow

A round barrow situated on a hilltop above Rosedale.

It was excavated by Elgee in 1937 and was found to be made of layers of sand and turf with an outer layer of large stones around its sides leaving a clear area on top. The excavation revealed a burial and three oak objects: a canoe, a coffin and a coffin lid in the shape of a canoe. The coffin contained a body wrapped in linen and laid on reeds. It also had three flints and part of a bronze dagger.

A secondary burial consisted of a cremation urn, a decorated cup, part of a bronze trefoil pin, part of a bronze dagger and a stone battle axe.

Evidence of the excavation can be seen in the form of depressions in the mound.
