I have passed these stones many times and always meant to photograph them, I was eventually spurred on to do so by an article about them by Ian Taylor on The Leyhunter web site. The dimensions of the stones given on this page are taken from that article and have not been measured by me.

The stones stand at the side of the road that runs from Stape to Egton Bridge over the North York Moors known as Wheeldale Road. The moor itself is known as Murk Mire Moor and is also home to the remains of a fine example of a Roman road. Ian speaks of the possibility that the holes in these stones have archaeo-astronomical alignments and may be part of leys; I have doubts on both counts but I'll leave others to make up their minds. Here I present the photographs, positions and dimensions only.

The distance from first to last stone is a little over two miles as the crow flies. I approached them from south to north, the first stone is on the right hand side of the road and stands 7 ft 3 inches high at NZ 79962 00124. Photographed facing north.

The second lies on the left hand side and measures 3 feet 6 inches high and bears a hole measuring 6 inches by 5 inches. NZ 79651 01226. Photographed facing north.

The third, also on the left, measures 6 feet high by 5 feet wide. NZ 79593 01584. Photographed facing north west.

The fourth, again on the left, stands at four feet high. NZ 79731 02548. Photographed facing north.

The road forks as you approach the final two stones. The fifth stone stands to the left of the left fork and is 6 foot 6 inches high, it has a hole 4.75 inches by 3 inches. NZ 80261 03328. Photographed facing north.

The sixth stone stands to the left of the right hand fork and is 6 feet high with a hole 4.5 inches by three inches. NZ 80275 03306. Photographed facing north.
