The Hand Stone is a guidepost. In 1711 it was ordered that
guideposts be set up throughout the North Riding. It is believed that
this stone was erected in 1712.
On the side to view in the
photograph it shows the road to Pickering or Malton and a carved hand
pointing the way. Several such stones exist on the North York Moors
depicting hands of varying descriptions and bearing names of towns and
villages with a variety of spellings.
