Allan Tofts is an area of land above the village of Goathland. It consists of a wide plateau at the top of a steep escarpment.
The area has been used by many people over the years and it is scattered with stones and mounds. It is a cairn field and has a field system there too. Some of the cairns will undoubtedly be the product of field clearance but others were used for funerary purposes, some have kerb stones visible.
Some of the rocks up there have these markings upon them, cup and ring and other lines and marks. They were obviously important at one time and meant something to those that produced the designs. The three photographs show those I found on my first trip, there are others hidden among bracken and heather that must wait for another trip later in the year.
