St Michael and All Angels

This is a twelfth century church rebuilt at the end of the nineteenth century on the same outline. The church is covered in high quality carvings, these are said to have been part of the original church and incorporated into the new one. Many have been moved inside to protect them from the ravages of the weather, some have been replaced with replicas while a few still seem to be suffering from damage - either intentional or from the elements.

Two of the photographs below show a green man and a figure referred to as a 'sheela na gig' by one source but I believe they were mistaken.

On a return visit I found several of the green men and some odd looking foliage carvings too. No sign of a real sheela, though I assume if she existed she may have been discarded during the Victorian rebuilding.

Three photographs show foliage spewing heads of various descriptions, I'm not sure of the fourth.

Next we have a rather odd looking foliage spewer, anyone any ideas on this

The next three pictures are of the interior corbel table, the one bottom left has a possible green man in the centre.

The final two shots are of a creature in the chancel arch, it appears to be female, she is probably a mermaid, and an unknown figure from the porch. This appears to have been a pair of figures, probably exhibitionist.
