Fat Betty

As can be seen Betty is a squat base topped with a round wheel-like stone. Her name may derive from a nun, Sister Elizabeth, who used to live at nearby Rosedale; she wore a white habit. However, this link is rather tenuous. There are other legends as to how the cross got its name but none of them are very convincing!

It stands at the junction of three parishes and was once upon a pannier trod.

On recent visits I have noticed that coins have been left upon the horizontal surfaces and wedged into cracks, this may be an extension of the tradition of leaving money atop nearby Young Ralph .
