This a sorry looking cross. It stands on Shooting House Rigg at a
junction of pathways and once guided travellers along their route. It
also acted as a boundary marker for the medieval lands of Whitby abbey.
It was later used for a similar purpose by the Cholmley estate, hence
the letter 'C' carved upon it later.
Now it is broken
into several pieces and one piece sits unsteadily in the old stone
cross base. There are pieces of carved stone scattered around it which
were once part of the shooting house.
