Lilla Cross

An impressive cross and probably the oldest on the moors. It is said
to mark the grave of Lilla who died when saving King Edwin from
assassination in 626. The cross commands a wonderful position with
views to the coast on one side and over the moors on the other. The
nearby RAF Fylingdales station marrs the view somewhat.
English Heritage's record states that the design of this
cross is from the tenth century rather than the seventh as it would be
if it were erected to commemorate Lilla, they believe it to be a
boundary cross as it lies at the junction of four medieval parishes.
