Mystery of lights over South Bay
|
A Scarborough man is looking for a rational explanation of mystery lights he spotted over the South Bay.
Kevin Wood, of Castle Road, was walking home from his work at the Spa
lift when he saw the lights, and he says that the RAF had no record of
any flights in the area that night.
"The noise it was making was not like any aircraft I have heard, anyway," said Mr Wood.
Now he is hoping that someone else might come forward who shared the sighting.
He was walking along the Esplanade by Prince of Wales Terrace at about 10.45 pm to 11.15 pm when he heard a noise out to sea.
"I could see nothing apart from an intense light not more than 300 to
400 ft up and about the same distance out to sea," he said. "I thought
it might be a helicopter or something, but it didn't sound like one.
"It was over the South Bay Pool, then it took a direct line over the
cliff tops before doing a 45 degree turn and flying inland towards
Olivers Mount."
Mr Wood said that he phoned Staxton Wold base, but it had no flights registered in the area at that time on Monday night.
"At the moment I really don't know what I saw, but I keep an open mind
about this sort of thing," he said. "I am just hopeful somebody else
spotted this and can back up my story."

COMMENT
It would not be unusual for RAF Staxton Wold not to have information on
flights in the area, particularly if they were not crossing the
Overland Area Boundary, as in this case. I believe it was a helicopter
that was seen, most likely from the Air Sea Rescue Squadron.
