More 'strange lights' seen over our skies
|
Reports of strange lights in the skies around Scarborough are increasing.
A Scarborough man today told the Evening News how he spotted unusual lights
moving about in the sky above Raincliffe Woods last Thursday. And on the
previous night a Reighton woman driving home with two others after a night
out in Scarborough spotted a bright light in the sky.
It is thought this was the same light seen in the sky over Rudston near
Bridlington by a woman recently.
David Marsden, 23, of The Whins, Newby, said of the Raincliffe Woods incident:
"It was a great bright light, dazzling. It was like a headlight on full beam, but
brighter than that.
"It scurried about then disappeared. When I saw it I got out of the car. I couldn't
hear anything. I know it wasn't a plane."
He said he did not believe in UFOs but was not sure what to make of what he
saw. Both the RAF and Coastguard were unable to come up with a solution to
the mystery.
A spokesman for the Coastguard said the only thing he could think of was that
someone had fired a parachute flare, which produces a very bright light for about
30 seconds.
But he said: "I don't know how anyone would get hold of one. We use them in
the Coastguard and the military use them."
The Reighton woman said: "What we saw was just like a shooting star but it was
much bigger. It was so bright, like a big ball of light. It came from nowhere. It came
down so fast and went close to the ground then disappeared. It was very
unusual."
The woman who first saw the light over Rudston said: "It was like a silver star
moving around the sky."

COMMENT
It is interesting that the light seen at Rudston was 'recently' but no
date given. At the time of the Reighton sighting Sirius was low in the
south sky and one explanation is that it was this star that was seen.
