The first church on this site is thought to have been built in the 9th century, it was one of the many resting places of St Cuthbert's body on its journey around the north of England avoiding the Danes.
The oldest part of the exisitng church is 12th century, this being the nave. It has a good Romensque door arch though my photograph below doesn't do it justice. Within the church are a couple of interesting carvings showing mythical beasts, both are shown below. There is also a faint mass dial.
