Mary Magdalen's Well |

One of my favourite local wells, it is barely visible from the road but slip down the bank a few yards and it can easily be seen. Often overgrown (and often cleared by me!) it consists of a small pool in a stone trough from which the water trickles down the bank. The stone set into the bank above it proclaims its name and the scent of wild mint welcomes you to it.
Saxon ware and pottery from the 13th century have been found when the well was restored which indicates it has been in use for some time.
A visit in Spring 2002 showed that the well had been 'restored' by building an archway over it and including the carved name stone in its structure. I'm not sure that this is an improvement though it is good to see it is being cared for. |
