Old St Stephen's sits at the top of the
hill overlooking Fylingthorpe and Robin Hood's Bay. It has not been
used regularly for many years and remains largely unchanged for over
two hundred years. It has the old box pews in place and a wonderful
three-storey pulpit halfway down the south wall. Being in a fishing
community it has many associations with the sea and its graveyard holds
graves of seafarers and memorials to some never found.
In a corner of the church is a display
case with examples of maiden's garlands used in funeral processions of
young women, these were then hung in the church and left to rot.
Another interesting point is that there is a spring near the altar, no
longer visible but the green mould tells of its existence, it belies
the history of earlier buildings and worship. During my visit there was
an exhibition of ganseys, fisherman's jumpers, and I was lucky enough
to hear some of the history and stories of the church from the lady
looking after the exhibition. You can see some of the ganseys displayed
on the pews in the photos below.
