Old Wive's Well |

The stone over this well has the words NATTIE FONTEIN crudely carved into it, exactly what this means is unknown but it has been proposed, by Edna Whelan, that it is a corruption of FONS NATALIS, a Celtic water nymph.
The area around the well has been recently used as a 'rag well' and visitors have left items tied to the neighbouring bushes. Unfortunately many of these are items of plastic and general rubbish, none of which will degrade very quickly, thus they are of no use as offerings. It is often an unsightly mess and should be discouraged.
Below is a later photograph (June 2007), it is a little more overgrown, there are no rags on the adjacent tree and the sign that used to show the way has been removed.
