Ebberston

St Mary the Virgin
SE 892 832

This church was once in the centre of the village which now stands a half mile to the east. It is a pleasant church which probably has Saxon origins and like many others has been rebuilt and added to over the centuries.

It has little of interest to me on the inside except a single corbel in the north aisle though this is a straight-forward male head. On the outside can be seen several stones which bear carvings in the form of patterns and designs and one, shown below, of a sword.

Also of interest was the odd carved figure which appears on much of the woodwork in the church, obviously the carver's mark.

Clicking on the map reference at the top of the page will take you to a map of the area
