Kirkby church was one of those that was reported as having a possible green man; I'd also read of some fine Saxon carved stones there. It lies just off the town centre and though I'd passed many times this was the first chance to call in.
The interior is quite large and pleasant, it has a rood screen, wooden reredos, a piscina and sedilia. An unusual feature is a room above the porch accessed by a stone stairway within the church, thought to be used by visiting priests.
The green man carving supposedly on a roof boss is doubtful I photographed it and another of interest and they are shown below. The carved Saxon stones now reside in a museum so I only saw their photographs in the church. Nevertheless, it is a fine church and I enjoyed my visit. |
