Escomb

Saxon Church
NZ 189 301

This church is thought to be the oldest most complete church in Britain and is unusual in that it does not have a dedication. It is believed to have been built between 670 and 690 though there are no written records for this period in which it appears.

The chancel arch is thought to be a reconstructed Roman archway and is decorated with a fresco, most of the rest of this fresco are now gone except for a little on the north wall of the nave.

In the porch are fragments of masonry from an early building including some cross fragments. The cross behind the altar is thought to have been the original open-air preaching cross which pre-dates the church. The church has a fine old font and a glossary termPiscina too.

Outside there are two mass dials, one appears to have a beast's head above it and a snake around it. In the graveyard are some old stones bearing the skull and bones motif.
