St Mary's

I visited this church by accident, the one I thought I was going to is actually near Peterborough.

It dates from about 1150 originally and still has an excellent 12th century Romanesque tower arch with an interesting acrobat figure on it. There were also some other 12th century carvings set into the wall, they apparently came originally from a nearby derelict church in Holme-on-the-Wolds and were incorporated into this church's walls in 1951. They are said to represent Christ confronting a demon, St Paul with a sword and St Peter holding a key. Below them is 'a figure brandishing a sword as he falls backwards' according to the information leaflet.

Outside there is a good west door arch, the door is now blocked from the inside and has been restored in places.

Clicking on the map reference at the top of the page will take you to a map of the area
