Helmsley church was a twelfth century church rebuilt by the Victorians, though there is evidence that a church existed on this spot much earlier. The church itself show little of its earlier form except for the chancel arch, this has an early form of green man carving on its north side. There is also a green man type carving on the reredos and a stylised sort of green man outside on the chancel's southern corbel table, though this seems to be some bizarre cross between a green man and a beakhead. All three are shown below. At the very end is a hogback tombstone, now found in the church porch, and a close up of the carving detail.
