Returning to Sherburn today I was able to get the key.
It was worth the wait, the inside holds many green man carvings as well as some Saxon and Romanesque pieces.
The
photographs below are of the green man on the newer font, many on the
roof bosses, on the rood screen and the organ case. Some of these are
of animal faces.
Next we have a carving from the rood screen. It is looking down at the pulpit and yawning, wonderful.
Below
that a
Piscina
in a box. It is covered by these wooden doors. The
carving at the top says altar missals so maybe this was meant as a door
to an aumbry or maybe it intended converting a spare piscina to an
aumbry. There are three piscinas in the church plus one on a pedestal
(not photographed as it held a flower arrangement and I couldn't get a
clear shot without disturbing the flowers).
Next is the
Romanesque font and a carving thought to be of the Saxon smith god,
Wayland. Underneath are some more of the Saxon and early Romanesque
carved fragments and finally an early carved stone incorporated into
the exterior south wall of the chancel.
