Loft Howe

Square Barrow

This is a good surviving example of a square barrow.

It is in Wykeham forest among the forestry plantation but some of the trees have been cleared around it to form a clearing. The ditch is evident though not as deep as it would have been, it is approximately two metres wide. The barrow itself is around nine metres by nine metres and stands about a metre high. There is a depression in the centre of the mound caused by earlier excavations but apart from that it looks in good condition.

As usual with these types of sites it is difficult to photograph.
