The small church of St Cuthbert lies at the end of a farm track north of West Woodburn. The only other buildings in sight are the farm buildings adjacent to the church.
A church on this site probably existed from at least 875 as it is known as one of the four resting places used in the transportation of St Cuthbert's body at that time. The chancel arch is likely to be the only remaining feature of the Norman church, most other features being destroyed or altered during several phases of restoration and expansion.
There are sections of crosses and gravemarkers within the church and around it, whilst they are of definite interest it is difficult to date them or even be sure of their original use.
