Sheela-Na-Gigs

Torksey is very near to where I grew up and I've passed the church many times without realising there was a sheela inside. Having said that had I seen it I would probably not have known there was a sheela. It has been whitewashed over and it is very difficult to see what it was originally.
Earlier descriptions say she is pointing to her vagina and has a sagging belly typical of other sheelas but it is difficult to see that now. However, the fact that this figure has been 'hidden' by whitewashing it so heavily suggests there is something there that people wanted to cover up. It also appears that the face has been destroyed, even under the covering this is visible.
